In all three known colonies of Lesser Kestrels in Bulgaria, the birds are breeding/reproducing successfully in 2023!
This was confirmed by the monitoring of the third known colony of the species, located in the territory of “LUKOIL Neftohim Burgas” AD. In the beginning of the week the joint team of Green Balkans and company representatives visited the nesting habitats of Lesser Kestrel, which nest in different facilities in the territory of the oil company. The rare falcons’ nest in a mixed colony with their cousins Common Kestrels, as well as other bird species, like Western jackdaws, Common Starlings, Little Owls. Similar mixed colonies can be spotted very often in nature, but except the safety that the colony provides for the birds, they often see competition and rivalry in the selection of suitable nesting sites. In this regard, environmentalists in partnership with the hosts have undertaken various conservation and research measures of one of the rarest falcons nesting in our country. The numbers of the nesting birds through the years are dynamic, but in the area aren’t registered more than 8 to 10 pairs, which is currently the smallest known colony of this species in our country. The national population of the species is about 40 nesting pairs, located in the southeastern part of the country.
The project team of “Life for Lesser Kestrel” LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017, implemented by Green Balkans and funded by Programme LIFE of EU, conducted observations of all three known nesting habitats of the species in the country. The other two colonies are located in the village of Levka, on the territory of the “Sakar” Protected Area, part of NATURA 2000 and the courtyard of the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre – Green Balkans in Stara Zagora, both colonies were created by Green Balkans, within the program for the recovery and protection of rare birds, implemented by the environmental protection organization in Bulgaria.
