Oct. 04, 2023
The Green Balkans team took part in Scientific-technical Conference of the Council of Junior Specialists in LUKOIL Neftohim Burgas AD organized on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the production activity of the factory.
A joint team of Green Balkans, University “Prof. D-R Assen Zlatarov” and employees of the company, presented to the participants the activities for the conservation of the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) and other rare species on the territory of the Company's production site. The scientific forum was held on 29.09.2023, in Burgas with increased interest from the participants, official guests, representatives of foreign companies and NGOs including BSPB. Especially attractive were the models of the Lesser Kestrels, made in life size and coloring, which illustrated Green Balkans' report.

The partnership between Green Balkans and the oil refining company aimed at the conservation and study of some of the rarest birds in Bulgaria – the Lesser Kestrel has been for almost 10 years. The territory of the Company's production site and the surrounding of Burgas are one of only three known places in the country where they nest. In this regard are the joint efforts of the environmentalists, the company and the academia. Green Balkans' conservation initiatives are within the framework of project “Life for Lesser Kestrel” LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017, implemented with the support of Programme LIFE of the European Union. Among the more significant of these are the placement of the artificial nests, the annual monitoring of the nesting colony, as well as satellite tracking together with University “Prof. D-R Assen Zlatarov”. Of course, information and education activities are also widely spread in the partnership initiatives. Very recently, the environmentalists have provided information materials and models of rare birds for the children who visited the Company on 01.09.2023 on the occasion of the company's anniversary.
The Green Balkans team expresses its gratitude to the organizers of the event for the opportunity to present the conservation activities of one of the rarest birds in Bulgaria.
