About Lesser kestrels, horses and people

Some people might wonder what the connection between Lesser kestrels and horses is!

Although they are entirely different animals, they have a lot in common. What is more, their existence is quite directly linked. You may find this unbelievable, but it is a fact that horses help Lesser kestrels!

However, the explanation is simpler than you think- by grazing the grass and small shrubs, horses “clear” the meadows, and in that way the Lesser kestrels can hunt and find food more easily!

And so, we learned who takes care of Lesser kestrels, but who takes care of horses? The answer to this is once again pretty simple – we do, the team members of “LIFE for Lesser kestrels” project LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017 of Green Balkans, as well as our friends - the breeders from the Levka village region and the local “Sakar Nature Park” society.

Here is an example - during those cold and frosty days horses find it difficult to reach food due to the thick snow cover and that’s why we foddered them with the grain. Of course, they gladly accepted our gift and they even allowed us to get closer to them. As our horses are more special, they live outside throughout the year, almost free, and are only limited by an electric fence. This gives them freedom but also makes them wild and wayward.
