Afforestation in Belozem!

Apr. 06, 2022
In early April, a Green Balkans team took part in the initiative "50 trees on the occasion of 50 years of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry-Plovdiv".

The afforestation took place in the area of the village of Belozem, and we chose an artificial wetland, separated by the Green Balkans team and the local hunting party. There we also released two white storks treated at the Green Balkans Rescue Center. The choice of location was not accidental. It is along the Maritsa River, which is part of the Natura 2000 network in Bulgaria, and the trees we planted will offer a home to many protected bird species living in and around the wetland.

Participants in the event were over 50 people - residents of the village, representatives of the department, jubilee, the hunting party of Belozem, team and volunteers of Green Balkans.

After the fieldwork, we went to the centre of the village, where we observed the storks that had returned to the colony. Then we visited the community centre in the village, where there are constantly displayed dioramas showing the life of white storks.

We told the participants about our joint activities for the protection and promotion of one of the largest stork colonies in Bulgaria, the one in Belozem, as well as the work of the Green Balkans for other target species, such as the Lesser Kestrel, and the ''Life for Lesser Kestrel“ LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017 project activities.
