Information tour of Green Balkans for NATURA 2000 in Belozem

Mai 19, 2021
***
On 15th of May we visited the White Stork Festival in the village of Belozem as part of the tour of Green Balkans for NATURA 2000 Day.

The event took place at the White Stork Park. The models of the Griffon Vulture, the Lesser Kestrels and the Red-breasted Goose immediately attracted visitors from all age groups, who had a lot of questions about the protected species. We were happy to answer them and also to provide information about the protected habitats and the activities of conservation and recovery, which Green Balkans perform.

We presented the flag banners exhibition for the Green Balkans' target species and the NATURA 2000 photo exhibition. The program of the festival and the White Storks, being amazingly close to the park, created a unique atmosphere.

We would like to thank the kind hosts - the “Prosveta 1909" Community Centre in Belozem, Municipality of Rakovski, the Council of Belozem, Primary School Geo Milev! We are looking forward to the festival next year!

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Griffon Vulture
Widespread and numerous in the past, at the end of the last century the Griffon Vulture had only 1-2 active nests restricted to the Eastern Rhodopes. Thanks to the efforts of conservation organizations, today the population of the species is growing and we can see it in the Balkan Mountains, Eastern Rhodopes and Kresna. The species and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.

Lesser Kestrel
The Lesser Kestrel – once extinct as a nesting species in the country and successfully restored 25 years later, thanks to the Green Balkans activities in the Sakar Mountains. The species and its habitats are preserved in the Natura 2000 ecological network.

Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
