At the end of last year, the team of project "Life for the Lesser Kestrel" LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017 of Green Balkans, funded by the EU's LIFE program, was contacted by the German bird park Walsrode.
The reasons for this were twofold, one of which was the desire of our colleagues to make a donation towards the goals of our work on the return and stabilization of the population of the Lesser kestrel in Bulgaria.
In addition, our German friends expressed a desire to "refresh" and diversify their breeding group of lesser kestrels with birds provided by the Green Balkans aviaries, and for some of their offspring to be donated back to nature in Bulgaria.
Our team gratefully embraced the donation and expressed readiness to assist in enriching the breeding population at the zoo.
In fact, this is not the first contact between Green Balkans and Walsrode Park. Our collaboration began a long time ago when, in the distant year of 2009, we imported the first two pairs of lesser kestrels from there, thus taking our initial, tentative steps towards realizing our big dream - the return of the lesser kestrel to Bulgaria.
And behold, years later the dream has become a reality, and the "old friends" are once again extending their hand to us!
We wholeheartedly thank them and believe that this is the revived beginning of a successful collaboration in the name of Bulgaria's nature!
