The Lesser Kestrels - these small but brave travellers!

Nov. 10, 2021
On the eve of winter, when all the Lesser Kestrels are already far, far south, we continue to follow the adventures of these small but fearless travellers!

You remember Emma, don't you? The bird, which the "Life for Lesser Kestrel" LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017 project team is monitoring for several years, thanks to its transmitter.

The latest news from her is wonderful! Emma is already in Niger!

As you will see on the maps, her way to her winter quarters passes through Greece, Turkey, Libya and Chad. We remind you that we have been following Emma since 2018 when the Green Balkans team installed her transmitter. It is part of the small colony of Lesser Kestrels inhabiting Lukoil Neftofim Burgas. Every year Emma visits Africa, and her favourite places for her winter vacation are Chad, Nigeria and Niger.
It is interesting that together with her a young female bird with a ring ZPV, marked this year by the newly opened colony near the Rescue Center of the Green Balkans in Stara Zagora, began its migration on a relatively similar route. She followed Emma's path, but for now, settled in Chad.

The choice of the Stara Zagora bird, however, is by no means accidental. Looking at the migration map of all the Lesser Kestrels we follow, it becomes quite clear that the places where they prefer to spend the winter are Chad, Nigeria and Niger.

So, the birds are far away, the winter in our country is getting closer. And when she leaves, it will be the turn of the warm spring and the return of the feathered migrants from the south!
