A six-year-old bird is the first Lesser kestrel that returned to our country this year!

Feb. 14, 2024
After on February 12 the team of the project "Life for the Lesser kestrel" LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017 implemented by Green Balkans with the financial support of the EU LIFE program registered the first for the year 2024 Lesser kestrel that returned to our country, today already it became clear and which one it is!

The bird was hatched in 2018 in the colony of the species inhabiting the aviaries of the Wildlife Rescue Center and was released the same year in the Sakar village of Levka.

An interesting fact is that this is the same bird that returned first to the colony last year as well, but significantly earlier. During the past summer season, it is also one of the most recorded birds during our observations - as many as 96 times, but we were never able to establish if it was part of a pair or raised juveniles during this season.

In contrast to 2023, in 2022 the bird was part of a pair, in the nesting platform on which 6 eggs were laid, 5 of which hatched, and 4 were successfully reared by both partners.

So, after solving the mystery, we are waiting for the next travelers who will soon return home from the long journey of migration.
